About this Ebook

How Well Do You Understand and Manage Your CNP Fraud Risk?

Three-step CNP fraud risk assessment

When you sell online, it’s important to know how your fraud program impacts your incoming orders.

  • Are you approving too many bad orders, which means too many chargebacks?
  • Are you declining too many good orders, which means angry customers and lost revenue?
  • How can you tell if you are appropriately approving or declining orders?

Catch fraud prevention mistakes before they happen

Maybe you rely too much on fraud filters. Or you limit the type of transactions that get manually reviewed. Or maybe you have no fraud prevention and protection strategy at all. The key is to identify where you are at risk…before fraudsters do.

For nearly 20 years, we’ve been helping ecommerce merchants assess their CNP fraud risk and put mitigation measures in place. This helpful guide will show you how to assess every aspect of your fraud program, so you can ensure you aren’t losing revenue to CNP fraud.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is a card-not-present (CNP) purchase?

A CNP transaction happens when an order is placed online, by mail or over the phone, without the merchant seeing the physical card.

Merchants only need to have the card details (credit card number, expiration date and possibly the CVV number). Because a manual signature and card imprint aren’t required at the time of purchase, fraudsters often use stolen credit card information to make purchases that the actual cardholder doesn’t authorize.

Is CNP fraud really that costly?

Yes! CNP fraud creates a chain of events that costs merchants more than just the cost of goods sold. Other costs include:

  • Shipping costs, especially when fraudsters request high-priority shipping to get the products quickly, which is often the case.
  • Chargeback fees when the cardholder calls their bank and asks for a refund.
  • Administrative costs related to processing and disputing a chargeback. Merchants have to conduct research, contact the customer, respond to the band and gather dispute documentation. On average, that’s up to two hours of time per chargeback.
  • Monitoring program fees that credit card companies impose if a merchant’s chargeback rate becomes too high.
  • Reputation loss when banks stop working with merchants and when customers pay the price of poor fraud prevention practices.

From the viewpoint of someone who has been the victim of credit card fraud

"We are in the Durable Medical Equipment supply industry and we use Shopify as our shopping cart. With Covid 19 we have seen a tremendous increase web traffic and online purchases. Prior to Covid 19 we had a number of fraudulent transactions that led to multiple investigations on Local, State and Federal levels all of which produced no returns only because the crooks were faster. This cost us in..."
